"On the evening of March 9th, 1566, David Rizzio, the private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots, was brutally murdered. Dragged from the chamber of the heavily pregnant Mary, Rizzio was stabbed fifty six times by a party of assassins. This breathtakingly tense novella dramatises the events that led up to that night, telling the infamous story as it has never been told before. A dark tale of sex, secrets and lies, Rizzio looks at a shocking historical murder through a modern lens--and explores the lengths that men and women will go to in their search for love and power"--Amazon.… (mere)

This novella has left me needing to dive into a Mary Queen of Scots rabbit hole. Mina quickly hooked me into the brutal world of politics and royal life in 16th century Scotland; not a surprise really, considering I have enjoyed her other crime novels set in contemporary Scotland. Recommended. ( )

A plot to remove Mary Queen of Scots from power. Mary's own husband was in on the plot. They need to remove Mary's private secretary David Rizzio from his position of influence in order to succeed. How better to do that than assassinate him? This story follows the coup as carried out as well as the actions of and consequences to Mary and her husband. It's a well-told story and can be read quickly. ( )

Read in two sittings today, this finely wrought, vivid novella about the murder of Mary Queen of Scots' friend and confident, the power struggles and jealousies of her court, thought provoking about how power was wielded then and now. Not a wasted word. ( )

David Rizzio was the private secretary to Mary, Queen of Scots. Denise Mina's new book tells the exciting and gruesome tale of his bloody assassination in 1566, a story of sex, secrets, power, and palace intrigue. This short novella is a quick read but steeped in atmosphere. From page one, the book pulls you into the sinister plot. The point of view drifts from character to character, giving the reader every nuance of the assassination and its aftermath. Rizzio is the perfect book to curl up with on a winter afternoon. ( )

Not quite sure why this novelette was written. Talks about an attempted coup to unseat Mary as Queen. ( )
