A sweet story about Beryl, a girl suffering from 'melancholia' (what we would call clinical depression today, not well understood or compassionately treated in Victorian times). Beryl is engaged to a lord of the manor who lives nearby, but whom she has very little in common with. It is his younger brother, Mark the vicar, who knows her better and treats her kindly when he learns about her condition and the sadness that she is often prey to. Beryl has read and heard so much about how sufferers of melancholia are selfish and useless that it is difficult for her to believe that anyone would view her with compassion. Fortunately for her, it is possible. 1864 After a year away with her Aunt Hortensia, Beryl Burnham is back home in Shelton Worthy and The Grange. Her family believe she is ready to marry neighbour Sir Henry Rivenhall. But what of his younger brother Mark, the curate. But what forced Beryl to leave so quickly. Rumours are awash in the village. An enjoyable well-written Victorian romance dealing with a difficult problem with its cast of likeable characters. An ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Mimi Matthews is one of my favorite historical fiction writers. Her stories are populated with such fascinating characters, and they always keep me riveted to the page. This book was especially interesting to me since it dealt with what was called “melancholia,” which is usually referred to today as deep depression or anxiety. Although this wasn’t as long as her usual stories, it felt complete in itself. The main characters, Mark and Beryl, are so engaging and wonderfully drawn, and I enjoyed them very much. I really like Ms. Matthews's books and have read all of them, but I was disappointed about this one. It's a subject not often dealt with fairly in historical novels; too often a 'melancholy' woman is sent to Bedlam or the like. Beryl Burnham suffers from depression, and I was happy to see that here it was treated in a more scientific manner. The problem was that this should probably have been a short story because nothing much happens. There's no real drama in the romance between Beryl and Mark, despite her engagement to his brother. Hopefully, the next one in the series will be better and I look forward to it. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

This book deals a lot with depression, which is something that I don't usually like to read about. But I think that it was handled pretty well, considering how varied people's personal experiences can be. ( )
