Learning Irish is an introductory course to the Irish language. The product of many years of teaching experiences as well as much original research, it serves a double function: providing a sound pedagogical approach to the ordinary language learner and at the same time furnishing the professional linguist with an authentic description of the spoken language. The book does not presuppose prior knowledge of Irish and gives thorough coverage of the grammatical patterns of the language. Texts and exercises are presented in an authentic, interesting, conversational style and in carefully graded stages. The learner is assisted in mastering the pronunciation by the use of phonetic speaking and by a related set of cassette recordings. The book can therefore be used either by an individual who wishes to teach himself the language or as a classroom text. Review of the Irish edition: "At last there is a teach-yourself Irish text that really works. . . . Learning Irish provides a logical introduction to beginners with no previous knowledge of Irish as well as a sound review for those who have studied Irish."--Janet Egleson Dunleavy, American Committee for Irish Studies Newsletter"A better language course than anything else available."--Evening Herald… (mere)

This is a pretty traditional textbook, vocabulary followed by grammar followed by translation exercises. It's not designed for people who want to speak the language from day one--you don't find greetings covered in early chapters, like in many modern foreign language textbooks. Instead, there is an emphasis on increasingly elaborate grammatical structures.

This is an approach that appeals to my style of language learning, but it won't be for everyone. If what you want is the opportunity to speak the language right away, there are other textbooks out there that will serve you better. If, on the other hand, you want to be able to read written Irish, or write it yourself, this is a good resource. ( )
