Durante una gita scolastica dell'asilo una bimba si allontana e trova un cadavere mutilato avvolto in un vecchio tappeto.
Il commissario Van Veteeren indaga, anche se, appena riconosciuta la vittima, sembra trattarsi di un'indagine inutile sulla morte di una persona inutile.

Ellen e Judith, quattro e cinque anni, cominciarono solo qualche minuto dopo a tentare di cavarsi reciprocamente gli occhi per via di un fazzoletto verde con dei coniglietti rosa. I'd missed this one in the march through the Van Vetteren series. A man released from prison after serving two twelve year sentences, each for a murder he claims he did not commit. Shortly after he returns home, a headless, handless body is found by some children in the woods, and the ex-convict has disappeared. ( )

Very hard to see past the overt misogyny in this book from the murderer who kills because his wife is unable to have sex with him and other women reject him to the returned innocent prisoner who thinks his various girlfriends want him to beat them. Van Veeteren's treatment of one of the nursing staff as little more than a drinks slave was also very unpalatable. ( )
