Callahan Kelly is a conman, pure and simple. With his dark hair, dark eyes, and dimpled smile, he can smooth talk anyone out of anything and has a keen nose for sniffing out liars and thieves. So clearly someone somewhere made a mistake including him on a train heading toward a training ground with an elite group of agents for the Crown. But Baron, the leader of the newly formed Royal Saboteurs, makes a deal with Callahan: stay until his troubles in London die down, and if he still wants to go, he'll be paid and discharged. But Cal finds the training at the camp fascinating, and even more intriguing is Bridget, the red-haired beauty who's immune to his charm. When Cal is asked to partner with Bridget to infiltrate a group of Irish separatists or return to London, the choice is neither simple nor easy. Bridget Murray was sent from London to serve as Baron's secretary. She never expected to be given the chance to carry out a mission for the Royal Saboteurs. She doesn't like Callahan Kelly from the moment she meets him. But when they're paired for to infiltrate the Irish nationalists, she reluctantly agrees to pose as his wife. Living in close quarters with Callahan isn't as awful as she expected, and that's just the problem. The closer they become and the more real the danger surrounding him, the more she realizes she doesn't ever want to let him go.… (mere)

Barbara’s rating: 4.5 of 5 Stars
Series: The Royal Saboteurs #1
Publication Date: 8/9/22
Period: Victorian - 1847 – Ireland and England
Number of Pages: 300

The 1840s was a time of great strife in Ireland. The people of Ireland were starving because of the famine and political unrest with the Irish citizens wanting to rule themselves rather than having Britain rule them. Some groups wanted peaceful protests – others – well others didn’t care how much bloodshed there might be as long as Ireland was independent. The Innishfree group is one of those who care little about who or how many are injured and it is the job of The Royal Saboteurs to infiltrate and stop them.

Bridget Murray loves her job as secretary to ‘Baron’ who was in charge of The Royal Saboteurs. She’s strait-laced, serious, efficient, and dedicated. She’s also a bit frustrated at the moment because she’s waiting at the train station for one of Baron’s recruits – and the man hasn’t shown up. All of the others are in the train car, but this one isn’t there yet and she cannot leave without him. Baron insists she wait. Then – there is a man running toward her and three hooligans are chasing him. That has to be him – and she’ll have to rescue him.

Callahan Kelly (I absolutely love his name) is a conman and thief. He owes money to some very bad men and they have every intention of collecting from him – one way or the other. He has a train to catch, but they are right behind him – can he make it? He doesn’t necessarily want to be an agent for the crown – he just wants the money Baron promised him. He’ll do his week at the ‘farm’ and then he’ll leave with the money.

Bridget and Callahan are polar opposites, but they complement each other perfectly. When they are sent into danger in the heart of Ireland, they must learn to trust and depend on each other if they want to survive. Can they discover the information they need and thwart Innishfree’s attack on English soil? Or, will they be found out as all of the other agents have been and lose their lives in the process?

This book is filled with excitement, danger, chases, romance – yes, a lovely romance. It is an awesome book and provides a great introduction to the series. The characters are compelling, interesting, and very relatable and we get great introductions to the characters who will be featured in future books. I loved the book and I hope you will read it and enjoy it as much as I did.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. ( )
