"Rookie patrol officer Rose Brighton chases a suspect down an alley. Without warning, her vision wavers, and the lone suspect appears to divide into two men--the real suspect, frozen in time, and a shadow version with a gun. Confused by what she's just seen, but with no time to second guess it's meaning, Rose shoots the real suspect in the back. Forced to lie to detectives, she risks her job and her life to discover the shocking truth of who she really is--a witch of an ancient House, the prey of one powerful enemy, and the pawn of another."--Page [4] of cover. House of Rose by TK Thorne Is a new genre for Ms. Thorne. She has the interests and talent to write nonfiction about racial history in Birmingham, historical fiction by giving voice and character to women in the bible, and now a fantasy crime novel with a magical twist. T.K.Thorne’s childhood passion for storytelling deepened when she became a police officer in Birmingham, Alabama. When she retired as a captain, she took on Birmingham’s business improvement district as the executive director before retiring again to write full time.
House of Rose is a story that swerves from life on Southside in Birmingham to one of witches, warlocks, visions, mayhem and magic. It tells of a rookie police officer, a woman named Rose, who is anything but what her name implies. It is a window into the life of a police man or woman and how they deal with their worst-case scenario—having to shoot someone. The plot has unusual twists and turns and it is impossible to predict ‘what comes next’. Predictable plots are a turn-off for me. There are rich descriptions of places and the characters who make up the story. House of Rose is especially enjoyable to read if you lived for a while in Birmingham and are familiar with many of the places in the book. The end of this book leaves you with questions and anticipation of the next book(s) in this trilogy. It was a fun read and highly recommended.
