The Upside of Falling is the act of learning to take chances. Colby knows what it means to dream. Dreaming got him through the toughest moments of his life. What happens when the hope that helped you survive, stands between you and your heart's desire? Colby and Rory are the beginning of the sweetest fantasy. Rory and Colby meet at a party. He doesn't want to have anything to do with her as he's dedicated to becoming a fighter pilot and thinks she's a distraction. But Rory is persistent and eventually, they get together. I really debated about how to rate this book and wavered between 1 star and 3 stars. It was okay until the ending which is just a ploy to get you to buy the next book (spoiler alert: I hate that). Otherwise, it's a fairly generic book about a teenage romance (yes, I know Colby and Rory are in their early twenties but they act much younger). They have the usual YA trauma in their backgrounds; Colby's is explored more than Rory's but I never really connected with either character. Their 'forever' love was mostly lusting and crumbles under the first test. Rory made me cringe with her subservience to Colby, first by chasing him so hard (have some dignity!) and then by obeying his commands in the bedroom. I probably wouldn't mind her responses in their sex scenes if she had some equal alpha time and she hadn't compromised herself in the first place by chasing him so hard. Certainly, with his background, I found his attitude a bit creepy; there's some potential there for domestic abuse. Maybe a stretch, but I could see if they had more depth as a couple, my mind probably wouldn't have gone there. I have the rest of the books because I first bought the third one, then went back to get the first one once I realized it was a four book series and wanted to read them in order. I don't know if I'll bother to read them; probably, but I'm not in a hurry after this one. I just can't. This has to be one of Meghan Quinn's best books to date. This is not one of the rom coms that she is so well known for. This book is heart wrenching, it's about finding the strength to let someone in, about uncertain futures. This book in turns had me crying snot bubbles, and sighing at how sweet Colby was. It's not all roses though, and I cannot wait for the second book of this duet to come out. Colby. Good Lord. This man needs and deserves love more than any other hero I think that this author has written. Rory. So persistent and with a such a beautiful soul. Together they are perfect for each other.
This book ends on a WHOPPER of a cliffhanger. I am thankful that this author won't make me months to release the sequel as I NEED answers. ( )
