Nagarjuna probably lived in the second century ce in India, and he was one of the most influential Buddhist thinkers. He developed his philosophy in the tradition of the Prajnaparamita Sutras, which teach that things are 'empty' like an illusion. The work which is here presented, is a translation of Nagarjuna's most famous work, the Mulamadhyamaka Karikas. Here the philosopher tries to show that reality cannot be reduced to conceptual structures, since thought and conceptualization are the work of mental presentation and are therefore fantasy. Reality, on the contrary, is experienced, and for that very reason it cannot be thought. This idea had a tremendous impact on the history of Buddhist thought in Central and East Asia. Nagarjuna shows the absurdity of concepts like substance, causality, and the idea of movement, at least in so far as these terms are considered as references to a reality as it exists in itself. Like the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, he stresses the limits of human understanding and in so doing creates a space for a freedom of experience. Book jacket.… (mere)
