This was a very intense read. I really enjoyed it. As a former exchange student to Portugal and a long time amateur historian of the Napoleanic Wars I am hardwired to like a story that takes place in Portugal during the Peninsular War.
Not as polished as Balogh's more recent work, but I appreciate the immersion in Spain during the Napoleonic wars -- it's a place and time I am unfamiliar with, and I think she did it justice. Fascinating. ( )

The entertainment in progress at Haddinton Hall in Sussex country seat of the Marquess of Quesnay, could not exactly be dignified by the name of ball, though there was dancing, and the sounds of music and gaiety were wafting from the open windows of the main drawing room.
