Rather more than 40 years ago the two senior authors, with the example of H. E. Forrest's Vertebrate Fauna of North Wales before tham, began to accumulate material with a view to producing Lists of the birds of the six counties of South Wales and of Monmouthshire.
Preface.
Salter, in 1893, recorded 209 species for Cardiganshire and our List, which follows, raises the number of species (235) and sub-species (4) now recorded in the county to a total of 239, which may be analysed as follows:-

TREE-SPARROW. Passer montanus (L.) Golfan y mynydd.
Has not been recorded for over sixty years; Salter saw four in a stackyard at Clarach on 20th December, 1901, and two at the same place on 9th February, 1902 (Zoologist, January, 1902, and February, 1904).
