The Singularity. It is the era of the posthuman. Artificial intelligences have surpassed the limits of human intellect. Biotechnological beings have rendered people all but extinct. Molecular nanotechnology runs rampant, replicating and reprogramming at will. Contact with extraterrestrial life grows more imminent with each new day. Struggling to survive and thrive in this accelerated world are three generations of the Macx clan: Manfred, an entrepreneur dealing in intelligence amplification technology whose mind is divided between his physical environment and the Internet; his daughter, Amber, on the run from her domineering mother, seeking her fortune in the outer system as an indentured astronaut; and Sirhan, Amber's son, who finds his destiny linked to the fate of all of humanity. For something is systematically dismantling the nine planets of the solar system. Something beyond human comprehension. Something that has no use for biological life in any form...… (mere)

The first chapter of this is called "Lobsters", and I'm reminded that I once had a restaurant meal of some smaller member of the family, drenched in a delicious butter sauce, but so much work to extract from their shells that I wasn't convinced I ended up consuming more calories than I'd expended in the process.

I tend to have the same experience any time I try to read cyberpunk / singularity style stories. There's so much novel technology (and anti-capitalism ideology) crammed into every sentence it's an assault on my mental senses, and it makes it a slog when actually I just want to... read a story. But these aren't really about the story (which, at least in the first chapter, is fairly slim) so much as the journey along the way. Really I need to accept that this sub-genre is never going to click with me. ( )

I was pretty annoyed that they just stuck 9 short stories together without any editing to make them into a whole. The plot is consistent and continuous; I don't need to be reminded at the beginning of each chapter about what I just read in the previous chapter.

This book is very dense with ideas. Some of the plot points are far-fetched or contrived, but he ties them together pretty well. ( )

Intense. There were a lot of great concepts in this book that I'm grateful to have now considered. In the end, my final thought was "I'm glad that's over." ( )

Apparently I liked this book a lot better than some people did, since i finished it. It was pretty slow going, as all the tech stuff was pretty dense. I would read for what seemed like an hour and find I'd only read maybe ten pages.

The biggest mistake I made was that I began reading it while concurrently reading Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. I do not recommend this! I finally decided to finish Cryptonomicon and then read something lighter before continuing with this one. ( )
