Foreword. This review was initiated in 1965 by the Nature Conservancy, then a component body of the Natural Environment Research Council but since 1973 an independent statutory Council.
Preface. A national strategy for nature conservation was formally prescribed in 1947 with the publication of the Govenment White Papers Conservation of nature in England and Wales (Cmd 7122) and National parks and the conservation of nature in Scotland (Cmd 7235).
