Between Two Worlds is the second in Upton Sinclairs epic eleven book Lanny Budd series, offered in a two volume set. Upton wrote the 11 book series covering World History from 1913 through 1947 in a 13 year period. Between Two Worlds was first published in 1941, the complete story covers the period from 1919 to 1929. This volume covers the first half of the full original book In this volume, volume two, the War to End All Wars ends with the Treaty of Versailles. Dark clouds hang over Europe as the Armistice levies harsh financial and territorial costs on Germany. Lanny begins a long love affair with a French ami, Maria, the sad and ignored wife of a powerful French businessman. Lanny enjoys some of the happiest years of his young life. His mother, Beauty, now a widow, begins a secret affair with one of Lannys childhood friends, the now German spy Kurt Meissner, and living in Paris post war. With Lannys assistance Kurt and Beauty are whished out of France into Spain to safety. Lanny continues to experience conflicted emotions between his comfortable and pleasant life and the exploitation he sees with the working class. Lanny becomes an art expert through his friendship with Zoltan Kertezi. With the profits he earns through his art business he supports the causes he believes in including the workers and the schools established through his many socialist friends. Lanny becomes witness to the rise of Fascism and Mussolini in Italy and the beginning of National Socialism in War ravaged Germany. He is introduced to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi partys beginnings in Germany. His father leaves the family armament industry and recognizes airplane and aerial assaults will determine the victors in the next Great War and thus begins an aircraft business after some success in the oil business. This, the second volume, will be as exciting for the reader as Worlds End. It is filled with the further development of the characters we grew to love in Worlds End and with a rich new cast of unforgettable characters. Some of which will long be a part of the epic series. This is an outstanding volume and one you will not want to miss. Volume three, the second part of Wide Is the Gate, concludes with the end of the roaring twenties and will be packed with tremendous changes in Europe as well as the United States. The journey of reading this epic account of world history in the narrative form is one you will not want to miss. If, like me, you read volume one, Worlds End, you will fall in love with this important and epic work and reading the entire series will be a joy like few you have ever experienced.
