A cool graphic novel involving an unlikely cast of characters: an Israeli soldier, an Egyptian hash smuggler, a couple of American students, one of whom is a wannabe suicide bomber of Lebanese descent, a wannabe revolutionary journalist, and a jinn brought together by the rather unlikely circumstance of the theft of a hookah in which it just so happens the jinn is imprisoned. This framework allows the story to explore the politics of the Middle East, the age-old theme of good versus evil, and the more mystical elements of the cultures there. However, because this is not a very long book, some of the themes are not sufficiently developed. I'm not sure that I got the point of this graphic novel, even though I enjoyed reading it. The characters were all quite interesting, but most of them could have used some more backstory to really flesh them out. I think that this novel could hvae been a real success if it had been a bit longer and had taken the time to really delve into the story.
I look to comics to show me experiences I haven’t had and get me thinking about new perspectives, with bonus points for unusual, interesting settings. Cairo has all of the above. Tilhører ForlagsserienNotable Lists

Edit: So, this has taken up residence in my head rent free. My mind is having after images of having watched a full length movie (in full color [the graphic novel is in black and white]), or having been there, like I should be able to turn a corner and return to it. ( )
