From New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh comes the third novel in the Horsemen Trilogy, in which a proper English lady discovers how desirable she really is after one very improper night . . . Sophia Armitage does not consider herself attractive. Even her late husband treated her more as a companion than a lover when she accompanied him to war. But Sophia hopes to enjoy a Season in London as her niece makes her social debut-until, that is, her hopes are dashed when she is faced with a threat she can reveal to no one. Then she meets Sir Nathaniel Gascoigne, an old army friend, and falls in love with him even as she must discourage his growing passion for her. Nathaniel can sense Sophia's unhappiness and fear, but does not understand that his attempts to protect and help her can only bring about her downfall . . .… (mere)

Red, Red Rose af Marjorie Farrell (rsstick)
rsstick: Red, Red Rose is about a group of friends (with a budding romance) at the outset of Wellington's peninsular war. The backstory for Irrestible is the same. They are both rich, well-told stories. I loved them.

The heroine especially seems to just have poor judgement, and that complicated and dragged everything out much longer than it needed to be, but she was otherwise likable I guess. Every couple in this series got in their own way a ridiculous amount and it's almost a miracle things still worked out for any of them despite it. lol. But, of the three, this one was my favorite. That my favorite is still only 3 stars shows that this series wasn't a knockout, but I'm happy to have read them the once. ( )

Gah, this had me in tears. I so, so identified with the heroine - I’ve always been “one of the boys,” plain and overlooked. I probably would have enjoyed this more if I read it in order, but I’m just not into romance books without relatable (for me) heroines. Though I think the first book in the series might be a good read for me, we’ll see. ( )

A fine conclusion to the Horsemen Trilogy. Nat and Eden both find romance here, though Nat's is the primary topic of the story. He and Sophie are adorable together, though I would have liked her to confide in him a bit earlier. Still, Ms. Balogh always writes a fine story and we get to catch up with the other Horsemen. ( )

I wasn’t a fan of the blackmail subplot as I hate reading about blackmail, but I’m glad that Sophie and Nat found their HEA. Also nice to see Eden fall too considering this is a trilogy yet there are four horsemen. ( )

There was always a sense of pleasurable anticipation attached to entering London even though one had to travel through the poorer, more crowded outer areas before reaching Mayfair and its splendid mansions and thoroughfares.
