Leila and Vlad’s love and passion has led to marriage and Leila being a vampire. Neither are innocents and both have a past with enemies. Vlad will do whatever he thinks will keep Leila save including locking her in at home. The both learn that a determined enemy will find a way to destroy them.

Leila has been through a lot on the carnie circuit and thought she was prepared for anything. Being held as a hostage to be tortured to do nothing more than torment Vlad, is a test of her inner will. One of the lesser problems is her being starved. I won’t detail more as it’s gruesome and horrific. Fortunately there is someone there that can help to a small extent so that Vlad can find and rescue her from the hands of evil.
Way too dark for me. I love the intense writing and world building of this author. This book had me rushing through the bad to get to the happy ending. Whew!
🎧 I listened to a lot of this on audiobook which was riveting! But it’s the same narrator, Tavia Gilbert, so I reverted to thinking I was listening to Cat being tortured rather than Leila. I tried adjusting the speed to change my impression which helped a bit. ( )

Che posso dirvi di Burn by flames? Sto ancora ridacchiando come una scema riguardo alla rivelazione finale di Vlad, che ci ha così svelato il suo più grande e terribile segreto... amerò per sempre Jeaniene Frost per questo!

La stimerò un po' meno, forse, per la sua decisione di allungare questa serie di un altro libro. Sì, è vero che nel finale di Burn by flames è rimasta una questione irrisolta piuttosto importante, ma si tratta di qualcosa che mi è parso slegato rispetto a quanto avvenuto finora. Temo che la serie Night Prince finisca con una delusione come già avvenuto per quella Night Huntress, dove Up from the grave per me faceva acqua da tutte le parti.

Sarei stata davvero contenta se la serie fosse finita con Vlad che fonde la roccia (letteralmente): Burn by flames, infatti, è uno sfoggio continuo di quella bastardaggine che rende Vlad così appetitoso (anche se in certe occasioni vorresti impalarlo in maniera creativa). Da Cat a Marie, nessuno si salva quando decide che vuole qualcosa: è così arrogante da riuscire a spuntarla sempre.

Eppure in Burn by flames, l'autrice ci mostra anche un lato più morbido di Vlad, quello che lo fa sembrare più umano e che esiste ancora nonostante tutti i suoi tentativi di distruggerlo. Sì, perché Vlad teme quella parte di sé più di qualunque altra cosa: sa che quella è la sua più grande debolezza, il punto debole in cui ogni suo nemico andrà a colpire.

Mi è piaciuta molto l'evoluzione del personaggio di Vlad in questo libro: la Frost ci ha mostrato le sue debolezze senza renderlo una damigella in ambasce (il solo pensiero di Vlad trasformato in una massa gelatinosa e tremolante mi mette i brividi). Spero che la Frost si mantenga su questo livello, ma sento puzza di bruciato (lo so, lo so, è una battuta squallida, ma la colomba pasquale sta ancora avvelenando i miei circuiti neuronali. Perdonatemi). ( )

It wasn’t as bad as I expected after some of the reviews I read (many of which, by the way, gave inaccurate information), but this book is still my least favorite so far in the Night Huntress world. I anticipated not liking it, but for series continuity, I decided to speed-listen to it on audio. So, I listened to it at double the normal speed and rolled my eyes a lot and felt repulsed by how dark and sadistic things got. I’m glad a lot of the violence against Leila was off-camera and not explicitly described, but I still thought it went too far, fast-healing vampire or not.

I’m pretty forgiving with how quickly folks fall in love in these things, but I’ve never felt convinced about Vlad’s undying, world-destroying love for Leila, and I’m tired of her getting kidnapped and tortured. I hope the fourth book spares her (and me) from that.

I liked the book more post-rescue and Vlad and Leila clearing the air—I loved Cat’s brief appearance—but I’ll be glad when this spin-off is complete. I hope Ian’s books are better! ( )
