Note: I accessed a digital review copy of this book through Edelweiss. ( )

This book is a very cute bilingual book! The book is in English and Spanish which gives a good look into Marisol's culture. Marisol is a girl who likes to mismatch everything because she believes that it is more fun and she does not care what anyone thinks! This is a good book about a girl who has a great personality and good outlook on life! I defiantly recommend this book! ( )

I like this book for its characters, plot, and language. First off, the main character is an interracial girl who likes to be different for the sake of exploring many different options. She also has an overwhelming amount of love for her family, especially her Abuelita. The plot of the book goes through how Marisol and her Mami plan her eighth birthday party to be a mix match costume party. However, Marisol does not just want a party, she wants to see her Abuelita. The best part of the story, however, is that it is multilingual. Each English part has a corresponding Spanish part with an English/Spanish glossary in the back. ( )

Marisol McDonald inspired by the author herself, Monica Brown. Like Monica Brown's family, the mom in the story was from a Hispanic background and the dad was from an American white background. I really enjoyed reading this book because I could totally relate to how she was feeling of what kind of birthday party to have, I used to be so indecisive about what kind I wanted too! I think the illustrations were great for children and depicted exactly what I was reading to help children who cant quite read all the words yet. This book had great writing with engaging ideas and words, it was organized and it flowed. The main message from this book was geared towards rejecting gender biased things like dressing up as a princess for a boy and a pirate for a girl. This teaches children that it's okay to be anything you want or dream of. ( )

In my opinion this is a great book! I loved how one page there was English and on the next page the same things was written in Spanish. This allows for any group of students to see that books can be translated and have access for all to understand a story. The use of Spanish words in the story also allows for students to pick up and learn a few key terms that are frequently used in the Spanish language amongst a family. The characters were live and vibrant. The main character was a girl who never matched and liked it that way. She made things her own and I feel students need to see that you do not have to fit a stereotype and being your own person is a great thing. The illustrations also go perfectly with this book. The character is energetic and vibrant and has a lot of character which is what the pictures portray. The use of bright colors and lots of movement coincide with the story. This books main idea I feel were many. First, it portrayed the idea of being your own person. However, it also portrayed how your loved ones who live far away can always be close to your heart. ( )
