Cute! And I love love LOVE that the artist, Jan Pfloog, took his/her time with the illustrations and crafted region-specific landscapes and creatures. Western Meadowlark! Red-Winged Blackbird! Mice and junk that I'd know about if I knew about mice and junk! Coming on the same day as I identified a pair of California Quail for the security guard at the railhouse, it made me happy. And it made Luisa sleepy! ( )

Personal Response: This book is a great book to teach children about puppies. I think that if a child wants a dog to take care of, this is an excellent book to show them how complex puppies can be. The illustrations in this book are amazing. A child does not have to know how to read for this book, the pictures truly tell the story. I loved this book as a child. I even named my childhood pet, Bruno. I still have the original book that I read when I was a child. Needless to say, it has been through the ringer. It is in bad shape, but my daughter has also taken up with this book.
Extensions:
1) The students could color a picture of a beagle while discussing the book.
2) The teacher could have a dog come to the class room for a visit. He/she could even show how to feed, wash, and play with the puppy. It would get the kids excited while they learned. ( )
