A family is hunted by a centuries-old monster: a man with a relentless obsession who can take on any identity. The String Diaries opens with Hannah frantically driving through the night -- her daughter asleep in the back, her husband bleeding out in the seat beside her. In the trunk of the car rests a cache of diaries dating back 200 years, tied and retied with strings through generations. The diaries carry the rules for survival that have been handed down from mother to daughter since the 19th century. But how can Hannah escape an enemy with the ability to look and sound like the people she loves? Stephen Lloyd Jones's debut novel is a sweeping thriller that extends from the present day, to Oxford in the 1970s, to Hungary at the turn of the 19th century, all tracing back to a man from an ancient royal family with a consuming passion -- a boy who can change his shape, insert himself into the intimate lives of his victims, and destroy them. If Hannah fails to end the chase now, her daughter is next in line. Only Hannah can decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to finally put a centuries-old curse to rest.… (mere)

Entertaining supernatural thriller. Well written, good characters, and a good payoff at the end. ( )

A great and entertaining supernatural thriller about long living shapeshifters amongst us. Extra plus for me that it's party set in Hungary with Hungarian characters and places. Clear to see that the author made a great and throughout research because apart from a few accent mark mistakes everything is correct. I've already ordered the sequel. ( )

Told in alternating segments that switch between different times (3 timelines total: one current, one in the recent past, and one roughly a century ago) and places, the narrative finally settles primarily into the now.

Considering the vast geography (several European nations) and time covered, and considering the idea at the heart of the story, this work should have been more compelling than it was. But I found the characterization lacking. This likely is due to the vast territories and timelines the story covers, and so isn’t really a flaw. Books that deliver this type of story don’t have much space for character development. Considering those constraints, then, the author has done a fine job getting readers to care about the people in this book.

The supernatural elements…and the fact that the shapeshifter hunts a specific family throughout time and down through the generations…is a fantastic concept. Overall, this is quite an enjoyable work that can be your next beach read.

Gemma Whalen narrator? Gold star, five gold stars in fact! She lends her skills to the story so well it was more than enjoyable to tag along for the shifting POV.

Stephen Lloyd Jones writer? Awesome and five stars again! I was so drawn in by his writing I would find hours had gone by while I worked and I didn't want to stop listening. There is a historical vibrancy to this tale of fantasy and fiction. He put me much in the mindset of Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian (a long time favorite of mine), but his pacing is better and not as heavy. It wasn't predictable and the characters never seemed to bore me. I want more! Definitely owning this book and the next...and looking forward to the reprise of Gemma's role as narrator for book two! I'm not sure how to rate this novel. It's well written mostly and drew me in. But I didn't love it. It does drag on too long and I think the end lets it down. There is a sudden appearance of a load of new characters and I got very confused as to who was who and what they wanted. And I felt the final death was necessary and to then find a way to reverse it was a cheat. It would have been better to keep it. I guess my feeling about this book is summed up in that I won't be seeking the sequel. ( )

THE STRING DIARIES

By

Stephen Lloyd Jones

This extremely tasty little gem of a thriller is many things. It is part thriller, part supernatural, part historical fiction and one hundred percent ingenious.
Deeply rooted in the historical recourse of Hungarian royalty and the manic nobility that Hungarian curses can offer nothing but evil, THE STRING DIARIES makes quite a debut in the realm of horror.

I must admit I read THE STRING DIARIES by Mr. Jones in less than 48 hours. Quite a departure of my normal finishing a book from cover to cover especially when there is a twenty one month old deciding that his world is the only place to exist.

He has the face of innocence. His eyes show no fear and possess a way to look into your soul and demand his bidding. A voice than calms even the most agitated human being. He can change himself into anyone to mock their lives, passing himself off as the person needed to have what he holds dear. He will not rest until he finds the love he lost bringing with him a curse no one can survive.

Hannah Wilde, her husband Nate and her pre teen daughter Leah know about this presence. They have been schooled on how to survive and to always keep one step ahead of him they know to ask questions with rare answers from everyone they meet. They know what lineage has befallen them by reading a group of very old diaries held together by many loose strings. Inside the pages are stories of how one family has been targeted my Jakab, a ‘Fonock’ a menace of Hungarian myth whose lust for one woman so many years ago has ravaged and destroyed so many innocent lives.

This thriller is original from the first page. Jumping back and forth over a hundred years and culminating in one place with all the major players ready for battle. Horror fiction has been stag net for so long. Every now and then a talented author like Mr. Jones summons up their writing talents and gives us horror aficionados what we crave most. A great way to spend a day or two off.

For the most part The String Diaries is a neo-gothic treat; original, richly imagined and powerfully told, especially the historical Hungarian sequences.
