El prestigioso historiador Geoffrey Parker ha investigado en archivos del mundo entero (cita alrededor de 2.500 fuentes) y nos muestra aquí unos 700 testimonios de hombres y mujeres que contaron en primera persona lo que vieron y sufrieron durante una crisis política, económica y social que se prolongó desde 1618 hasta los años ochenta del siglo xvii. El autor también ha recogido una enorme cantidad de datos científicos sobre las condiciones climáticas en esa época, y su análisis de estos archivos «naturales» y «humanos» cambia por completo nuestro entendimiento de lo que hasta ahora se había dado en llamar la Crisis General. Las alteraciones que se dieron en el clima durante las décadas de 1640 y de 1650 —inviernos más largos y severos, y veranos frescos y lluviosos— interrumpieron los ciclos de siembra y recolección, lo que causó escasez, desnutrición y enfermedades, e hizo aumentar el índice de mortalidad y disminuir el de natalidad.
