I've read all of Lisa Scottoline's novels...she's one of my favorite writers, but Save Me didn't do it for me. I'm so disappointed and can't help but wonder if the book was rushed out in time for Mother's Day as well as for it's bullying theme. The first couple chapters were okay, but I only made it just past page 60 or so, then started skimming pages, then started skimming whole chapters, then just gave up on it. I am not a skimmer, but I was hoping to find something that would convince me to keep reading. The characters were drawn too thinly to keep me interested. Rose seemed like she had some back-bone in the beginning when she tries to talk with the girl in the lunch room who is bullying her daughter, but after that her self-doubt and lack of personality become wearisome. This is a woman who uses a burning board to smash through fire to get to her daughter but doesn't demand to see her daughter when the doctor says she can't, even though the girl is sedated and sleeping? Is she suffering from PTSD? It doesn't seem like that's implied anywhere. This is a woman who didn't put her foot down with her first husband regarding his shallowness about their daughter's birthmark until much damage was done to the girl's self-image. The first husband died in a car accident after they divorced and her current husband is this supposedly fabulous guy who, within hours of the explosion/rescue, calmly informs her that they could lose it all, they could lose their house if the other mother sues them? And then they leave their daughter alone at the hospital overnight after she almost died? Incredible. I just couldn't suspend my belief to read on. I've come to expect more complexity and depth from Scottoline. ( )

Lisa Scottoline does not disappoint readers in "Save Me." The book goes deep to the heart and has many layers. The best part is that you don't know where the next chapter will take you.

The question of "Is Rose over-protective?" is a theme that runs through the book. What would you do? Have you been ever had a child who stood out from the crowd? Have you been the child who stood out in the crowd?

Apart from the story itself, it was a thought-provoking book. ( )

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.It is about a family with a child that has a birth mark on her face and she is bullied. The story goes further to include a school fired and some peoples deaths. The wrong person is accussed .It is one that catches your heart. This could be anyones child. What would you do to protect your family or your children ? .That is what this woman has to decide.Loved it !! Loads of cliches and clunky writing, but I was totally caught up in the story at the beginning (and Cynthia Nixon does the audio version) -- and then a dozen twists and turns made it ultra ridiculous. Consider this one a James Patterson read alike. ( )

Rose McKenna was a wife and mother of two, she was helping in her daughter's school when something blew up near the lunch room and a fire started, as she was trying to help get the children out, she thought about her daughter that always hides in the restroom because of a birthmark on her face and she gets bullied for it. Rose fought through the fire and finally got to her little daughter and got them both out, but the smoke had got to Melly her daughter so they were both taken to the hospital. Not knowing then how bad the blast had been until later when she learned that a teacher and two lunch room workers were killed and a little girl was in a coma in IC.

As the story progresses Rose gets blamed for the little girl that ran back into the fire and then she already had a secret that she had always kept. The father of Melly was dead and she was not married to the father of her baby son. But all through the book when something went wrong the word "Mother" was always in a sentence by itself and I could not understand why, until way over in the book when she disclosed it.

I had no idea that this book would be such a great read as I have never read any of Lisa's work before even though she is a "New York Times Bestselling Author". The book is full of anything you may want to read about, love, mystery, children and the author really tells the story that will keep you turning page after page. No fair looking in the back to see how it all ends, sometime it is tempting but I don't ever.

Thanks to St. Martin's Press for sending me this book free for me to read and enjoy, It is my choice to do the review.

Scottoline, who shifts gears at every curve with the cool efficiency of a NASCAR driver, expertly fuels her target audience’s dearest fantasy: “Every mom is an action hero.”
