Tessa Gratton, her debut novel Blood Magic arrives in 2011 from Random House Children's Books, followed by the companion Crow Magic in 2012. Jaclyn Dolamore is the debut author of Magic Under Glass from Bloomsbury USA. Lesley Livingston is the award-winning author of Wondrous Strange and Darklight, the first two books in the bestselling trilogy from HarperCollins. Frewin Jones is the bestselling author of the Faerie Path series and the Warrior Princess books, among many others Caitlin Kittredge is the author of the Iron Codex trilogy, a Lovecraftian steampunk adventure. Dru Pagliassotti's first novel Clockwork Heart was one of the first in the rising new genre of steampunk romance and was named by Library Journal as one of the five steampunk novels to read in 2009. Dia Reeves is the debut author of the critically acclaimed YA Bleeding Violet. Michael Scott is the Irish-born, New York Times bestselling author of the six part epic fantasy series, The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. Maria V. this is marked a DNF, though more specifically it should be 'Probably Will Finish Later Date' since its an anthology. I just was having trouble getting into some of the stories.

A few cute stories. Some dreadful ones. Most of the latter were more in the YA fantasy genre than steampunk - the only hints of alternate technology in some were airships and windup robots as side effects to coming of age romances. In summary, a passable book, but barely. ( )

This collection shows some of steam-punk's growing pains. When this type of story started coming out, just being steam-punk was innovative. Now that it's been around long enough to have its own set of tropes, it takes a little more effort to stand out. Tick tick boom in particular, while written solidly enough technically, was completely paint by number steampunk, and completely forgettable. (Just a week after reading, I had to look it up 3 times to remember what happened.) The darker stories in the collection tended to be better, but even though I liked Vast Machinery of Dreams it's very lovecraft-lite. Cannibal Fiend was a little gross, but interesting. Under Amber Skies was well done, and split my sympathies in an unexpected way. Chickie Hill has promise too, but was a little wacky. Memorable though, which I can't say for some of the others.

So, not a bad collection if you want mostly very classic, comfortably predictable steam-punk shorts, but not as much new here. ( )

What a brilliant, thrilling, wonderful collection of stories. I really don't think I've ever enjoyed a book of short stories more. I liked almost every story immensely. The only one that didn't grab me (and I didn't finish) was "Chickie Hill's Badass Ride." The 1960s setting and slang turned me off and the plot was weird.

I haven't read a lot of steampunk so I was surprised that this collection included so much fantasy. Surprised, but pleased. The two concepts work really well together. Also, don't be turned off by the subtitle "13 Steampunk Romances." While each story does contain a smattering of romance, kissing, and courtly intrigue, that usually wasn't the main plot. The stories contain strong female characters, clever dialogue, twists and turns, and of course plenty of clockwork. Because of the title and the female protagonists, boys probably won't pick this up, but there are a couple of stories inside that would appeal to them.

My very favorite stories included:
"Rude Mechanicals"
"Wild Magic"
"The Clockwork Corset"
"The Airship Gemini"
"The Emperor's Man"
"Tick, Tick, Boom"

I liked this anthology! For me the stand out was Maria Snyder's story, but all of them were good in their own respect. I'm not usually into romance books, but I thought I would give this one a try and I'm glad I did. It was fun, engaging, and I looked forward to the next story. Good book, well written. Would recommend. 4 out of 5 stars. ( )
