A.J. Liebling's classic "New Yorker" pieces on the "sweet science of bruising" bring vividly to life the boxing world as it once was. It depicts the great events of boxing's American heyday: Sugar Ray Robinson's dramatic comeback, Rocky Marciano's rise to prominence, Joe Louis's unfortunate decline. Liebling never fails to find the human story behind the fight, and he evokes the atmosphere in the arena as distinctly as he does the goings-on in the ring--a combination that prompted "Sports Illustrated "to name "The Sweet Science" the best American sports book of all time.… (mere)

I love A.J Liebling's writing. His personality comes through in a way that can't be faked by those who aren't such interesting characters. However, I just couldn't finish this book. I made it about 80% through before I realized I really have no interest in boxing. So I don't recommend this book unless you're a boxing fan. ( )

This book is a collection of essays that the golden era of boxing, the 1950s- in my opinion, it wasn't much of a golden era. It was interesting because a number of scenarios that an experienced boxing fan is aware of are covered like the slow decline of a fighter who refuses to acknowledge what is happening, although Liebling could get too bogged down in minor details and jargon. Taken as a whole, it was enlightening. ( )

This book is considered the epitome of sports writing about the sport of boxing, and a serious contender for the best sports writing in English. I think that's justifiable opinion. Even if the exact details of the careers of the men that are written about are not of any interest to you, you will still learn something of the human character by reading the book. There's a little bit of racism in the book by modern standards, but ..... ( )

I hate boxing. I refuse to see "sport" in two men (and more recently, women), usually of the working class or lower, beating the sh*t out of each other for entertainment. And although this book is considered a classic of sports writing, it didn't change my mind. -cg

Discovered this in 1984 after moving from NY to SF Bay Area. I was obviously already homesick, and Liebling's wonderful boxing essays are also love letters to New York. I'm nuts about this book.
