"The youngest of three brothers, K just wants to be an all-American boy-shooting hoops with his buddies and riding his Huffy around the San Fernando Valley. But K understands there's something different about himself, a longing that draws him closer to his friends while making him feel more and more alienated. At home, K must navigate another confusing identity: that of the faithful son of Iranian immigrants struggling to survive in the United States. To make his mother proud, he tries to do well in school and help around the apartment, but he worries he is disappointing her. On Friday nights K dutifully attends prayers at the Mosque with his remote and unknowable Baba, whose love and violence will distort K's understanding of what it means to be a man"--… (mere)

And intriguing, and at times, moving accounts of a first generation immigrant family to Malibu in California. The parents had moved from Iran and had three children who grew up to essentially be Americans. It’s the story of how their family dynamics change, and indeed the deterioration of the relationships between them. This is a novel about the perilous fragility of intra family dynamics.

Worth reading, and is definitely of interest to those with Anne interest in immigration, the Middle East, and social isolation. ( )

Everything depends on how relentlessly one forces from this experience the last drop, sweet or bitter, it can possibly give. This is the only real concern of the artists, to recreated out of the disorder of life that order which is art. -James Baldwin, Notes of a Native Son
I will great the sun again,
the stream that once flower in me...
I will come, I will come, I will come
and the entrance will be filled with love.

I climb down the bunk ladder and leave the small room me and my brothers share. The apartment is still and stuffy and Maman is asleep on the living room floor. I head out the door, careful to close it quietly behind me.
