Horror novel-obsessed Mica Angeles discovers the guy she fell for comes straight out of one of her books. Miguela Angeles is tired. Tired of her abuela keeping secrets, especially about her heritage. Tired of her small Vermont town and hanging out at the same places with the same friends she's known forever. So when another boring Sunday trip to church turns into a run-in with Sam, a mysterious hottie in town on vacation, Mica seizes the opportunity to get closer to him. It's not long before she is under Sam's spell and doing things she's never done before, like winning all her martial arts sparring matches - and lying to her favorite people. The more time Mica spends with Sam, the more weird things start to happen. Like terrifying-visions-of-the-world-ending weird. Mica's gut instincts keep telling her something is off, yet Sam is the most exciting guy she's ever met. But when Mica discovers his family's roots, she realizes that instead of being in the typical high school relationship, she's living in a horror novel. She has to leave Sam, but will ending their relationship also bring an end to everything she knows and everyone she loves?… (mere)

This book was...interesting. It felt very YA, 'I'm not like other girls', instantly fall in love with the boy (all of which I'm pretty sure it was going for so it was spot on there). All of that, but with a hellish supernatural twist. Overall, the concept was really interesting but the execution felt very rushed. I'd also say that the verses from Revelation were a little weird and and too on the nose. ( )

This was disappointing.
The presmise sounded amazing. A girl falling in love with a demon and then bad things start to happen around her? Sounds like a spooky contemporary horror drama.
The actual book felt very cliche. Girl lives an average life with friends and family. She is Not Like ther Girls. She meets a boy and immediately falls in love with him.

I really, really disliked the romance. They meet and fall in love so quickly, there was little to no development that made it believable. There is nothing between them that makes me like their relationship, which in turn makes all the drama about him being an evil supernatural being annoying. Lastly there is the reveal that Mica is a descendant of the 'Good Side', which felt like an easy cheat to emphasize how different they are.
I did not care for either of them.

I will compliment the book on the light and easy writing style. As stiff as the romance and plot felt, Mica's friend group felt very organic and fun. ( )

An utterly delightful, darkly humorous romp through Hell and back.

Mica - short for Micaela - feels smothered by her three best friends, her small town in Vermont, but most of all, by her abuela. When she has a meet-cute with hot newcomer Sam in a bookstore, where he borrows a book from her, Mica quickly feels like Sam's the only one who supports her dreams.

The only problem is - ever since Sam and his sister moved to town - strange things have been happening. Mica and her best friend, Zee, have been having visions of literal hellfire, and seeing creatures that shouldn't exist in the shadows. Plus, all four friends seem to be developing magical abilities. Mica's sure it has something to do with the death of her mother, yet another thing her abuela won't talk to her about.

This paranormal fantasy borrows heavily from Biblical, Catholic tradition, including starting chapters with verses from the book of Revelations. The first half of the book builds characters and chemistry, while the second half dives into nonstop action as Mica tries to save her town from whatever's come their way.

Mica's dark humor made me think of another recent phenomenon: Wednesday Addams from the Netflix series. I loved seeing the events through Mica's eyes. Plus, Mica has smoldering chemistry with two different boys - hottie bad boy Sam and loyal best friend Rage. She says: "What startles me most is the realization that when I'm with Sam, it's like there's a tunnel and everything blurs so all I can see is him. But in that moment with Rage, nothing faded away, but the only person I wanted to see was him." Mica will have to decide which boy - and which future - is right for her.

Thank you to NetGalley for the advance review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )
