What a cute book! Margarita is a little girl who goes to the post office with her mom. As they are waiting in line, Margarita says "Hi!" to everyone she sees, but she never really gets anything back. Everyone is so preoccupied with their day that they just kind of nod to her. Almost hopeless, she tries one last time as she gets to the front of the line, and the desk worker greets her with a big hello and even gives her a big farewell. This book is a great example of how not everyone is cruel, and if you keep being yourself and friendly, you will always find a person who shares the same friendliness. ( )

Hi by Ann Herbert Scott, illustrations by Glo Coalson, is the story of young Magarite's trip to the post office, where she says "Hi!" to all the people in line. No one responds or even notices her, until she tries on more time at the head of the line.

This sweet story will connect with many parents whose children have gone through this HI phase. Coalson's watercolors reflect this gentle story and show a post office being used by a variety of ages and races. 3.5 stars. For post office & mother and daughter themes, ages 1 to 5. Recommended for preschools and public library collections. ( )
