The story is about a woman in a painting, the story of her and her lovers, admirers and the conflict that goes with it. I enjoyed the book. The author's condensed writing style left me wanting more, more description, more padding. It was certainly an easy, quick read, but I felt I was being propelled towards the end, with no time to linger. Unfortunately the story was a bit of a let down. What had I been expecting? I'm not sure, but I didn't find any depth to the plot. Just because you like one book by an author doesn't mean you'll like them all. A "coming of age" story, but about an elderly man who reconnects with a woman who disappointed him many years ago. As in real life, not everything is neatly explained by the end of the story. But the narrator has enough new information and insight to make changes in his life and relationships in the future. There is a lot more to the story, including an artist and an art collector and the painting of the woman nude descending a staircase, referencing Marcel Duchamp's work. A quote I liked: ... and then [the Aborigines of Australia] had their children taken away. The taking was well intentioned, it brought tremendous suffering to both parents and children. My wife would have nodded; she liked to say that the opposite of good is not evil, but good intentions. But the opposite of evil is not evil intentions, but good. "A missing painting. A mysterious woman. Her husband and her lover. Here, the internationally acclaimed author delivers what his fans have been waiting for since The Reader--a powerful new novel about obsession, creativity, and love. A brilliant and naïve young lawyer's life is changed forever when a painter and his subject--a breathtakingly beautiful woman--appear at his office in Frankfurt. The woman's husband is deliberately marring the painting of his wife he commissioned the artist to make. Now the woman and the artist want the painting back. Simple enough--or so it seems before the lawyer becomes enmeshed in the lives of this toxic trio. Love, theft, and deceit unfold in quick succession when the woman, and the painting, suddenly go missing. It will take a strange turn of fate and a natural disaster to reunite the lawyer, the husband, and the artist with the woman they all love, hiding out in Australia--and when they find her they will be forced to reckon with the lies and betrayals of their shared past. This is an intricately crafted, poignant, and beguiling novel--it is Bernhard Schlink writing at his peak"-- No library descriptions found. |
