This story is about Christopher Columbus' life and dreams. Columbus lived in Italy with his parents, his parents were weavers. Columbus knew he did not want to be a weaver, he wanted to be a sailor. Columbus read and studied about the sea and maps. One day the ship he was on sank and Columbus ended up in Portugal. This is where he met his first wife and they had a son, Diego. His wife died and he later re-married and had another son, Ferdinand. After six long years Columbus finally had someone to pay for his voyage. This king and queen named Columbus "Admiral of the Sea". He put together three ships and named them the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Coloumbus left for his voyage in 1492. Columbus went from island to island in search of gold. He ends up in Haiti, there he found Indinas. He returned back home with a few Indians to show the King and Queen. Christopher continued to sail, at one point he reached a large piece of land, only he never knew that was America.
Personal Reflction:
This is a very old story, but it written well enough for children to read. It has a lot of detailed information of Columbus's voyages. It will be a great book to read when learning aboput Cheistopher Columbus. It shows that he had struggles as well as success.
Classroom Extensions:
1. Include this story when studying about Christopher Columbus, to help give the kids a better idea of who he was. Then the children can write a paragraph about him.
2. Have the kids draw a picture of the three ships Columbus used on his first important voyage. Make sure the children lable each ship with it's name. ( )
