The characters were developed by Mauldin during his Army service 1940-1945. During training, Joe was a smart-assed Choctaw with a hooked nose and Willie was his red-neck straight man. Overseas, during the stresses of shot, shell, and K-rations, they did sort of switch roles. This book groups the collection of reprints more or less by subject--discomfort, rank, weather, food, etc, in training and overseas. A fine and expansive (complete? - not sure) collection of Bill Mauldin'e "Willie and Joe" soldier strips done from within, and for, the fighting Army during World War II. They hold up very well today, have a fine sense of dark humor that conveys what must have been the prevailing sentiment of the soldiers, and are pretty darn funny to boot. Should be read in conjunction with Ernie Pyle's war dispatches. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
