Steve Zaloga is one of the more reliable writers for Osprey and this booklet is a good indication why, as he does a neat job of showing how the fortification system on the D-Day beaches evolved and how this impacted operations. The short version is that at Omaha Beach the Germans had achieved close to a text-book solution in terms of density of installations and having sufficient troops on hand to man them, contributing to the high American casualties; it's just that the text-book aggressive counter-attack never came and the German defenses fell to weight of numbers.
