In the tradition of 'When Bad Things Happen to Good People' this inspirational work is an accessible guide to recovering from personal tragedy and loss. Naomi Levy is an articulate rabbi who in her adolescence was shocked by the violent murder of her father into a spiritual struggle. At that time she lost her faith in the idea of a benevolent God and felt let down and alone. Her book speaks to to anyone whose life has been shaken in a similar way. She tells how she and many of the members of her synagogue who have been buffeted by tragedy have found the courage to redefine their faith and return to life. She helps us no matter what our religious beliefs are - to gather our forces after the death of a loved person, after a physical assault, after a divorce. or after wounding loss of a job. How to we rebuild our lives after a major loss or tragedy? The answer is never simple, but in this profound and moving book Naomi Levy offers the reader guidelines for recapturing our hope and innocence.… (mere)

To Begin Again, by Rabbi Naomi Levy. A compassionate understanding of grief that is useful for those of any spiritual belief. Levy realises that the question after a personal tragedy should not be, "Why did this happen?" but rather, "How can I go on?" (Thorsons, 1999).

I heard the author interviewed on television and felt the book would be a good gift for a friend who has undergone a tragedy. I "skimmed" the book when it arrived but was soon pulled into it and read it from start to finish. Now I have to purchase another for my friend as I'm definitely keeping this one. I'm not Jewish (I'm Lutheran), and fortunately, I have not undergone a terrible tragedy like many in the book. However, this book has so much to offer all of us regardless of our circumstances. It has reaffirmed my belief in a God who doesn't "meddle" in our lives, but one that guides, supports, and loves us. The author's stories come from people she knows -- people just like all of us. Her devotions are short, simple, and true to the mark. This book is a great treasure! ( )

I found this book very helpful in a difficult time. It was realistic and spoke about the challenges of life, and the support we may need. ( )
