What a nice way to liven up a dull subject. Play to the students' sense of disgust. Nicely done. ( )

Elizabeth Raum presents typically boring information about the Colonial time period in a way that engages all ages, children and adults alike. This book is an informational text that is very visually appealing and offers students many interesting facts about what life was like in Colonial times—particularly what hygiene was like. This book features an abundance of resources, such as maps, timelines, and population statistics. It also covers a variety of interesting topics, including discussions of starvation, dirty jobs, hard labor, traveling rough roads for trade, lack of running water, etc. It also provides a glossary of Colonial terms, a list of related books, and other internet sites to visit.
I would definitely recommend using this book to spice up a unit on Colonial America, because it is much more interesting than traditional textbooks. The colors are bright and there are lots of interesting photos that pull the reader in and keep their attention. This book is probably best for upper-elementary students, especially since there is some gross information in the book ( )
