The Cameo Classics were a Grosset & Dunlap reprint series of illustrated classics published from 1935 until the late 1940s. The books were mostly Illustrated Editions Co. books rebranded with the Cameo Classics series name. The books had a clear, acetate dust jacket and were boxed in a slipcase with an illustrated cover. The series contained illustrated versions of classic titles published earlier in more expensive editions.

Still I hear the echoes of the old music: "We be Soldiers Three -- Pardonnez moi, je vous en pris. Lately come forth from the low countree, with never a penny of money."

The contents of this slim volume are most of the stories of Kipling's three soldiers, and a single page preface from the author.

The God From the Machine
Private Learoyd's Story
The Big Drunk Draf'
The Solid Muldoon
With the Main Guard
In the Matter of a Private
Black Jack
Only a Subaltern ( )

866 Soldiers Three, by Rudyard Kipling (read 31 Aug 1966) My brother-in-law lent me this book as it was a special favorite of his. I was underwhelmed by it, did no post-reading note, and now remember little about it. Wikipedia has an article which tells more about this collection of short stories. ( )

Soldiers Three (The God from the Machine): The Inexpressibles gave a ball. They borrowed a seven-pounder from the Gunners, and wreathed it with laurels, and made the dancing-floor plate-glass, and provided a supper, the like of which had never been eaten before, and set two sentries at the door of the room to hold the trays of progamme cards. My friend, Private Mulvaney, was one of the sentries ...
