A KNIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR IN A SAVAGE GALAXY

Captain Dominic Flandry has been knighted for his many services to the Terran Empireâ??an Empire which is old, jaded, and corrupt, as Flandry well knowsâ??but he also knows that the Empire is better than anything that is likely to take its place. And while that "Sir" before his name may be an added attraction to comely ladies (not that he has ever lacked for the pleasant company of the same), he expects that it will also bring him less welcome attention from envious "colleagues" within the empire.

What it is not likely to do is make him more of an object of interest to the alien Merseians, whose plots against the Empire he has repeatedly foiled. They already are as aware as they can be of how much simpler their plans to rule the galaxy would be if their most dangerous adversary were the late Sir Dominic Flandry.

This is the sixth volume in the first complete edition of Poul Anderson's Technic Civilization saga.

...I must admit that reading Captain Flandry, I had begun to tire of this character. Anderson does use the same basic plot for many of these stories and indeed, this volume contains mostly more of the same. The last novel contained in Sir Dominic Flandry has given me hope that the last volume may contain some more interesting work though. There are two more Flandry novels to go in the next volume, both of them written later in Anderson's career. I seem to like the ones Anderson wrote later in life a lot more than the early stuff. Let see how Anderson takes us into the Long Night and beyond in Flandry's Legacy.

Three novels and a short story. And that appalling, off-putting cover.

Nothing much to say about A Plague of Masters, the first novel. Hunters of the Sky Cave has much of interest, including a delightful demonstration of Anderson's ability to fully imagine interesting aliens. The short story's--well, a short story, about how the empire's disintegrating right before Flandry's eyes.

A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows--the final novel in this book--is by far the most elaborate tale in the entire van Rijn/Falkayn/Flandry set. Captain Flandry's getting old, and it's starting to wear on him. The novel's convoluted, carefully plotted, and a bit experimental. I can't say everything works, but it's an impressive effort, and on the whole it's successful. And Kossara's far more appealing than most of the women in this series.

By the way, this is the first ebook in the set which was clearly built from scanned pages. I was a bit surprised. There weren't a lot of errors, but enough to annoy. One rather suspects the editors are growing bored with the project....

Acknowledgment: In her essay "Lurex and Gold," Sandra Miesel referred to Dominic Flandry as "the last knight of Terra." I am grateful to her for giving me permission to use that striking phrase as the subtitle of this volume.
