I really liked this book because it taught me to never underestimate anyone. It made me laugh and cry and it surprised me in more ways than one. It’s about a group of sped kids and they thought they were nobodies until their teacher changed their mind. I’m really happy I read this book! ( )

Junkyard Wonders teaches acceptance, embracing differences, and unconditional love. It is a story of a young girl, Trisha, who is the new kid at school. Due to developmental challenges, she is placed in a special classroom referred to as the junkyard. Trisha feels pain and shame about her placement, but grows to love the people she meets. Junkyard Wonders is a beautiful story with a unique perspective. Different doesn't mean less than and this story really shows that. I would recommend this to any teacher that has any type of student with a disability in the classroom. ( )

Trisha moves to Michigan from California to attend a new school because at her old school she was picked on for being in a "special class". Trisha is sad when she learns that she has been put in a special class at her new school, as well. However, Trisha soon learns that she has a wonderful teacher, Mrs. Peterson, and she and her new classmates become best friends. Mrs. Peterson teaches Trisha and her classmates that they should be proud of their differences. Together, Trisha and her friends restore a model airplane that they find in a junkyard and install a motor to make it fly.
The Junkyard Wonders is a story about belonging and finding friends who will support you unconditionally. The book teaches that there are many different ways of being intelligent. It shows how important it is for all children to have teachers who uplift them and believe in them. The book is both heartbreaking and joyful. I would recommend The Junkyard Wonders to all elementary school teachers. ( )

This book wasn't what I was expected but I really enjoyed it. Patricia has become one of my favorite authors. I like how realistic this book is with the reason Patricia wanted to change schools. I've met several people who wanted to change schools to get away from people talking about them and not wanting to be their friends. I think this would be good for younger audiences to give them perspective on how they could make other students feel when they pick on them or ostracize them for being different. After reading this book, I came to love the analogy behind the title. My favorite thing about this book is how encouraging the teacher is and starts off reading them the definition of being a genius.
