In the late 1800s, former slave and veterinarian Bill "Doc" Key realized that his new foal, Jim, was no ordinary horse. Believing in the power of kindness and patience, Doc taught Jim to spell, recognize the primary colors, and even make change from a cash register!
Performing in shows across the country, Jim stunned audiences with his incredible skills. But when some people called Jim a fake, Doc set out to prove them wrong and to show the world that, thanks to the power of kindness and patience, Jim was truly a wonder horse.

This book in my opinion was really good. It was based on a man named Bill "Doc" Key and his horse Jim Key. Bill was born into slavery in 1833 and from a young child he had his way with animals. His main belief was that the best way to teach an animal or make it feel better was through kindness. He showed this when he was able to teach his horse Jim key how to do basic math, identify his colors and the letters of the alphabet. The story to me has a deep meaning, showing that animals are smarter then people tend to give them credit for and that no matter what background you are born in, you can always make a name for yourself. Doc Kay, a former slave, loves animals and promotes an end to animal cruelty. He trains a horse named Jim Kay to do tricks like spelling out words and operating a cash register. A true story about a marvelous horse that seems too cool to be true.

The illustrations in this book were wonderfully done, and represented the nineteenth century perfectly. This story also shows younger children that it is not okay to abuse animals, and if they are treated with kindness they may become very educated. This story also provides somewhat of a history lesson as it is a fictionalized retelling of Bill Key.

This is about a man who made it out of slavery. He became rich and bought a horse who had a foal. The foal could not race, so he taught the horse to do many other things such as, spell, know colors, do arithmetic, dance, and more. It came about that many people thought that it was a hoax. They said that a black man could not teach a stupid horse. He proved everyone wrong when he had Harvard scholars prove them wrong. The pretty much lived happily ever after.
