Dare surprised his family when he ran off to New York City after his college graduation and took a job as a bartender. What's even more surprising, even to Dare, is that the bar he works in sits above a BDSM dungeon. And it's not just any dungeon--Master Roman is a legend in BDSM circles...and he appears open to giving Dare a glimpse into his world. And although Dare isn't gay, there's something about Roman that intrigues him...and maybe just enough to take a peek behind the curtain.

I found it difficult to stay focused on this one. The characters didn't grab me, and the change in narrators left me having to really think about who each of the people involved in the story were. Participants from scene to scene changed so much that it almost didn't have a good thread to pull the reader through. ( )

I can't believe it

When I started this book I had my doubts. Would I really enjoy a story about gay bdsm? Was I crazy to read this? The answers are Yes and No. I've never read a book so hot my brain begged for more and when life interrupted I was irritated. I'll definitely be buying book two but may need to wait for a weekend so I can go into hibernation and read! ( )

Adair (Dare) finds himself with cold feet at a moment when everything in his life seems to point in the direction of proposing marriage to his longtime girlfriend. Instead he moves in with a cousin who gets him a parttime job as bartender in Roman's 'Above the Dungeon' club. Roman has a TPE master-slave relationship with Jeff.
The novel (m-m bdsm erotic romance) is part one in a series of two and describes what happens next in the lives of these three men, using alternating perspectives to do it.

What I like about the story is that all characters in the novel are pictured in such a lifelike way that I feel I could actually run across them in the wild. The main characters are not superhuman people, but ordinary people, with a job, feelings and doubts, a character with the weaknesses that are invariably there. Real people, not cardboard.

One scene that struck me in particular, has one of the characters asking of another: "Why do you like me?". This is a question I seldom see asked in the erotica genre. Falling in lust, the overwhelming butterfly in tummy feeling that in real life often fades after about six months or so, in novels usually seems more than enough to justify the mutual choice for one another, either in this vacuum or for life. And of course, in real life, there is nothing wrong with a 'carpe diem' way of life. But not everyone is the same, not everyone lives by this rule of thumb alone. There are people who ask the other question as well. "Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four?". Why shouldn't (some) fictional characters do the same?

The fact that the main characters have their weaknesses, their doubts, is another reason for me to love this novel all the more. Even if they consciously choose to do as they do, yet they struggle at times with their inkling and what resulting decisions could or would entail. It makes them human in my view. Everyone worries now and then. Again, why shouldn't (some) fictional characters do the same?
I found it fascinating to read how the interactions between the characters bring them closer to themselves and shape the journey they take in life.

I gather that some readers have expressed concern at some parts of the novel, attaching labels such as 'dubious consent' and questioning whether some of Roman's practices in his dungeon and elsewhere are SSC (safe, sane, consensual). In contrast, I thought the novel an excellent depiction of how RACK (risk aware consensual kink) can work and was never bothered by any portrayed events or Roman's character as a (dungeon) master.

I thought it was a very enjoyable novel.
The novel can be enjoyed as a stand-alone, there is no huge cliff-hanger at the end, although I do wonder what will happen in the concluding part of the series. ( )

I won this book as a prize in the MM Romance birthday party. Wow, this story is so hot. Jeff has been with Roman for a long time but he loves to fall in love but suddenly Roman has noticed someone else. Dare has run away from his life and is being drawn into this new life. I loved how you really got into both Jeff and Dare's head to see the story from the both the perspective of someone who has lived the lifestyle and someone who doesn't have a clue but seems drawn to the lifestyle. Roman is so much of both men's world but you realize how they are part of his as well. My favorite quote that illustrates this point is found on p127(on my nook)Jeff is thinking, "Surely I created Roman the Master as effectively as he created Jeff the slave, through my ability and willingness to be transparent, to share with hime my darkest desires, holding nothing back." Above the Dungeon is maybe a bit much to extreme to be my cup of tea, I’m not sure I would be comfortable to live an experience like the one in this novel, but indeed it has an original development and some nice and particular characters. The odd thing is that I really didn’t “like” any of those characters, and for like I mean in a very personal way, and that is perfect understandable since I would not want the lifestyle they so obvious need. It’s not a judge on what they want; it’s an admission of what I would not be able to understand.

The story is told in two points of view, something I didn’t immediately understand and it made the discovery pretty nice. Adair is a out of age runaway “kid”: he is 26 years old and till now he has always lived the life someone else planned for him; but when he was there to do that final step, marrying the nice girl his father chooses for him, Adair broke free from the cage and the place where he finds a shelter is his cousin Maddox’s New York apartment, and also a job as bartender in the gay club the same Maddox works as bouncer. Above the Dungeon is indeed a night club above the Dungeon of Roman, and Roman takes immediately under his wings the new kid on the block, and recognize in him the desire, and need, to be freed by his straight laced upbringing. Adair, now Dare, will find in Above the Dungeon more than a job, and will find freedom in being in power of someone else… this is probably what I didn’t like of him, I would have preferred for him to take a more independent path, to probably discover a bit ore of himself before giving all of him to another man.

In any case, Roman remained a mystery, even more when the second chapter, and second point of view started, the one of Jeff, the long-term 24/7 slave of Roman, the one who is living with him. As Jeff himself explains to the reader, Roman and he don’t have an open relationship, but are aware that cheating is a possibility, and they went through it in the past, but they had already decided that their relationship is more important. They are together since 12 years, and they are pretty sure that it will be something lasting forever, and so he thought Jeff before Dare enters the picture. Until then it was Jeff who had some out-track experiences, but they were mostly flirts, something Jeff probably needed to prove that he was still an attractive man, I felt a bit of self-esteem issues in Jeff, something that he probably brought on from his family background. But the relationship between Dare and Roman is not a flirt, not like the one we witness between Roman, Jeff and Tristan. And Dare has to come to pact to this new development to not face the possibility to loose Roman.

And now we come to Roman; I think that he has actually never expressed any preferences over Dare rather than Jeff; indeed if asked, Roman told that he would not willing to jeopardize what he has with Jeff, and that he would be willing to let it go Dare. But Jeff knows that he can’t put Roman in front of a choice, since Roman is the Master and Jeff the slave, and so in no way Jeff can ask to Roman to choose between him and Dare. Roman’s reassurance to Jeff is done by words, but also with gesture, like really collaring him, for the first time in 12 years, and not only as a play during sex.

Again, I’m not sure the balance Jeff, Roman and Dare find is something that will last, I’m not so sure that Jeff is really willing, or able to share Roman, as indeed I’m not sure Dare is really ready for this relationship. In any case, the author is able to make me wonder about it all, and this means these characters have depth and development.
