This novel reads like a non-fiction book about a young boy inspired through his late father's letters to God to write his own letters to God when he finds himself faced with a life-threatening illness. While the boy's childlike faith might strike some as contrived or unlikely, I have seen this kind of faith and courage in youngsters in real life, as well as the very realistic reactions of the older brother who feels abandoned and the mom who cannot comprehend why double tragedy would enter her life. Perhaps my favorite part of the book, though, was the uncharacteristic compassion and insight provided the boy by the grandfather of his best friend. A quick read, this one's a winner. ( )
