This is an extended version of a pamphlet that was written by the author. This is a great book because it really answers the most common questions about Buddhism. The author is black but her knowledge and experience transfers to everyone who reads this. I have practiced Buddhism for over 5 years, yet this book was a eye opener. She filled in details on what I knew about Buddhism that I did not know where to get the answer from. That is how good this book is. I would have someone read this before they went to a service, so they don't feel totally lost the first time out. Great book. ( )

It is one thing to proclaim that you are a buddhist. It is another to be black and buddhist. You always have to have a list of answers to the most frequently asked questions. Sometimes you just want someone to do the talking for you. That is what this booklet does. Zenju is the first African American monk in the Soto Zen traditions, a tradition that includes the late John Dadido Loori (amongst others), she answers the questions in a manner that is accessible to anyone. Even seasoned buddhist can learn from this book. She answers the most common questions and some that one may not have considered asking. The book also includeds hand drawn drawings and a poem, that really enhances what it is like to be black and buddhist. I plan on keeping one in my purse and giving it away to anyone who asks. This a much needed book in the growing cannon of buddhist writings by Afrcian Americans. ( )

The precepts are meant to assist us in valuing life and in not judging the self or each other from a righteous place. They are not principles to measure someone's flaws or level of spirituality. There is no external punishment for breaking these precepts. Mostly, the precepts describe how an awakened person lives mindful of the possible suffering caused by his or her actions.
