I agree with CharlesDeferdinands review. This is serious not popular work of history. I would add it does make clear that there was constant evolution of tactics to try and find a means of winning ( )

Most of the histories of air warfare in WW I deal with purely aviation aspects and air to air combat (the Eindecker was defeated by the DH2, who was defeated by the Halberstadt etc etc). Very few deal with what the air forces were actually for, namely influencing the land battle. This book tries to fill the gap. It deals exclusively with trench warfare on the Western Front, other aspects, such as the German strategic bombing campaign are not covered.
It gives a very interesting strategical and operational view of air power in WW I, and is heavily based on statistical analysis. One thing that is made clear, for instance, is the staggering increase in scale of air operations between 1915 and 1918. For all its fame, the Fokker Scourge only claimed the lives of a few dozen Allied pilots, whereas in 1918, the RAF was flying double squadron patrols. The book covers all combatants, dealing with French, German, British and US operations. There is even mention of the Belgians.
However, it assumes that the reader is familiar, not only with the basic facts of the Western Front, but also with the technical and organisational details of the various air forces. Terms as Jasta or corps aircraft are used without any introduction. Explanations and background are given pages after terms have been introduced. The narrative is broadly chronological, but some thematic chapters jump backwards and forwards. Add to this a highly personal use of metaphor by the author, and the result is a rather confusing book.
There is a lot here that will interest the student of air power, but it is only recommended if you already are familiar with the subject, and have a lot of patience. ( )
