Linchpin is like a bad Khalil Gibran of trite professional improvement advice. Its 90% obnoxiously inspirational, and 10% useful information. ( )

Practical advice with a punch to make you get "doing." Loved it. ( )

Mostly a cheerleading book, I would think most people have thought about this subject before. I appreciate a work culture of transparency and openness to ideas, and that helps bring about a lot of questions about status quo. ( )

Nice idea .. But only read the first 100 pages .. The remaining 136 pages were rambling and kind of a waste of time .. For me, at least, because I ended up skimming through them .. ( )

I'd heard about Seth Godin for a long time now, but this the first book of his that I read. It was an interesting place to start. Godin argues that a linchpin is a person who generates value through their creativity, making them indispensable to any company they create. He does not say that this is an easy thing to do or that it will win you the good will of your boss or your peers, but it can give you a form of security that traditional career paths no longer offer. It game me plenty of food for thought. ( )

"The world has changed (again) and the stakes are higher than ever. Now we're facing a full-fledged revolution -- a hypercompetitive world involving art and gifts and fear and the ability for you (for anyone) to make an indispensable contribution to something you care about. If you're not indispensable (yet) it's because you haven't made that choice. My goal is to help you see that the choice is yours."

p.27 "You don't become indispensable merely because you are different. But the only way to be indispensable is to be different. That's because if you're the same, so are plenty of other people."
p.27 "The only way to get what you're worth is to stand out, to exert emotional labor, to be seen as indispensable, and to produce interactions that organizations and people care deeply about."
