Cute and light fairy tale. Perfect for the 8-12 age group. I loved how the author weaved in so many know fairy tales and that the heroine only had her own wits to get through her challenges. The love story was sweet if a bit shallow (it is a younger middle grade book). The ending was a tad rushed and seemed to end almost abruptly. I would have like at least a few more sentences to end the action. It just got wrapped up and stopped. Still, I'm glad it was a stand-alone book instead of another series. ( )

This was adorable, it was like a mish mash of fairytales all rolled into one main story about Sleeping Beauty. I did not expect all the "extras" in the stories, hansle and Gretel, princess and the pea, frog prince, beauty and the beast .. I just couldn't .. it was so cute and fun to read and I actually might continue in the series. And the way they told this was spellbinding I was so caught up in the magic. ( )

This book is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty. The modification is that there are two princesses, Gwendolyn and Annabelle. When Princess Gwendolyn is born, she gets the spinning wheel curse that we all know about. E.D. Baker decided to tell us what we didn't know. Gwen has a younger sister named Annabelle. At her christening, her parents accept a spell that repeals all magic. This is both a blessing and a curse for Annabelle. Whereas Gwen is stunning and graceful, Anna is just average looking.

Falling right in line with the story, Gwen pricks her finger on her 16th birthday and everyone in the castle falls asleep...accept Anna...because magic doesn't work on her. It's up to her to find the prince that will break the spell. First she seeks out Gwen's betrothed. He's kind of a player and a drunk. Anna isn't sure that he's the right one, so she enters a contest to win a prince. He chooses Anna, but since she is nothing like Gwen, Anna is skeptical that he's the one. There's a few other princes, including one that has been turned into a bear, and her own friend Liam. All the princes proceed to the castle for a chance to kiss Gwen.

This is a humorous take on the Sleeping Beauty tale, however Baker is not my favorite fairytale author. She's more about telling a funny story with amusing characters, while sacrificing good character development. At times the silliness goes beyond my tolerance level, but I will always recommend her books to kids, because this is exactly what they like. ( )

A clever twist on the classic princess tale. ( )

Not amazing, but a worthy read and a lot of fun. Plenty of adventure, humor, and insight. Not subtle, but it'll still make the reader think. If you're worried that your little girl is too much into princesses, this is a princess book she'll enjoy and you won't mind reading. With a less girly cover, I could imagine her brother enjoying it, too. Probably best for ages 10-12 or so, not the littlest. And of course, also terrific for us grown-ups who still have a fairy-tale loving little girl inside. ( )

This book is dedicated to my fans, whose loyalty and enthusiasm has meant so much to me -- particularly the fans on my message board, those who send letters, and those who send their wonderful entries to my contests. It is also dedicated to my family, whose understanding about late dinners and a messy house enables me to keep writing.
