thesmellofbooks: Though not at all the same story, there are some interesting parallels between Dave Duncan's Great Game series and Vaughn's Discord's Apple. Among them is the theme of ordinary people used and abused by gods who are not all gods are cracked up to be. I quite enjoyed both works.… (mere)

This is a lovely book. Interesting plot, good main characters and Hera was well written. I understood her actions and I like it when I understand the enemy. It makes the story believable.

It took some getting used to because of the four different storylines, but I liked that in the end. It would have been a better book if it was less full of....all kinds of things. There is a lot of backstory and none of it is being told in detail. I would have told this story in two books I think. There is so much I still want to know about this world. Or I would have mentioned less. Both choices would have made the story better, but in the end it doesn't matter. I love this book and I will probably read it again. ( )

Dear Ms. Vaughn,

Please respectfully accept this as my humble request that you write a sequel, companion book, follow-up, something to Discord's Apple, which is as kick-ass and original story as I have ever found. I loved that you merged Greek mythology, folktales and fairytales, King Arthur, global political struggle, and the most awesome little storeroom in the world into one intricate story. I am willing to take anything you may be willing to offer in this new world you have crafted, be it a short story, another book, a graphic novel, or hell, even just a throwaway comment on the web somewhere. Because THIS BOOK WAS JUST THAT AWESOME. I didn't expect it to be this good, it started off kind of ho hum, another interesting urban fantasy, but then you pulled out the immortal Greek warrior, and things started looking up but wasn't quite into the "amazing category" but then you threw in Merlin, King Arthur, Hera, and Robin Goodfellow. Okay, that was better. But then holy cow that ending! ( )

This book is kinda hard to categorize - pretty intensively greek myth focused, good spins on that, interesting family history of main character, interesting romance that slowly develops -- altogether, a pretty nice package. There's even an interesting side plot of the story that the main character is writing expertly woven throughout the whole. Weirdly, though, I didn't find it as totally satisfying as that collection of descriptions would lead me to expect. I also don't particularly like that Hera totally gets her way in the end -- the whole book is set up for some kind of clever trick to force her to back off, and instead they just cave and do what she wants and deal with the ramifications after. Still pretty interesting, but it just didn't knock my socks off. ( )

I was excited about this book, as I love reading books that incorporate mythology into the storyline (Norse Code, for example). I enjoyed it enough to finish, but only because I felt like I ought to. The comic book storyline (main character is writing a comic) was really distracting and detracted from the plot of the book. It seemed like Vaughn added it in to fill enough pages to hit that elusive 300-page mark. The writing didn't push me along like it usually does. I think the book deserves 3 stars, but GoodReads rating system says 2 stars means "it's okay," so 2 stars it is. ( )

Started reading (& ended up skimming) DISCORD'S APPLE by C Vaughn. Good premise, didn't like the execution. Her style isn't for me, I think. I wasn't fond of KITTY either.

I love the idea. Some of the execution works well. I wanted to like it. But the only character I really felt much for was Sinon, and even then it wasn't enough to keep my interest. ( )
