I'll continue on with this series just because I'm a completist, but I found it to be rather ponderous. I haven't read other reviews or interviews with Ken Follett, but I wonder if he considers this series his own War and Peace. ( )

An epic historical novel centered on World War I, and several families (British, American, Russian and German.) Follett weaves his usual magic, creating compelling characters, twisted love lives and relationships, battle between the wealthy and poor, etc. I thought it was well researched although some of the random meetings between characters were a bit far fetched given the scope of the undertaking. Even so, I am looking forward to reading the next installment of the Century Trilogy. ( )

I slogged through the 13 hour ABRIDGED version; can't imagine how droll might be the 30 hour book. I had a hard time staying with this one. There are several plot lines, representing people and families....makes it hard to follow. The details of their lives are excruciating. Since it's a historical novel, we all knew the background and the characters react to the situation appropriately. I did finish it; but, I won't bother reading #2 and #3--there's more to life than a long, boring trilogy. ( )

This is set mostly during WWI. The story follows multiple characters in Wales, England, Germany, Russia and the United States.

It was good. Very long, but good. I found I wasn't as interested in the politics (no surprise here) and the war, but was more interested in the characters' personal lives, and the female characters, as well as the fight for women's right to vote. Throughout most of the book, I didn't think I'd continue on with the trilogy, but I think it depends what the sequel will focus on. I'd be more interested if there is more focus on Germany at that time period where this one left off, but I'll have to look into it. I listened to the audio, and the narrator was very good - he does amazing accents, and had so many to do in this book. I had to get past his voice, though, at the beginning, as he also narrated an audio I found incredibly boring. ( )

Overall, Follett is masterly in conveying so much drama and historical information so vividly. He puts to good use the professional skills he has honed over the years — giving his characters a conversational style neither pseudo-quaint nor jarringly contemporary. That works well. And for all his belief in the redemptive quality of liberal humanism, he makes sure not to endow his characters with excessively modern sensibilities. As for the occasional cliché — well, unless you’re Tolstoy, you’re not going to have the time or the ability to be original throughout your 1,000-page blockbuster. Ken Follett is no Tolstoy, but he is a tireless storyteller, and although his tale has flaws, it’s grippingly told, and readable to the end.

Despite all this, "Fall of Giants" offers pleasures that more than compensate for its lack of literary finesse. Follett may not be Tolstoy, but he knows how to tell a compelling, well-constructed story. Once its basic elements are in place, the narrative acquires a cumulative, deceptively effortless momentum.
