Wow. This election is the first one that I actually followed closely, so a lot of material in this book was familiar. It showed the absolute soap opera that the 2008 election was, from the Obama/Clinton rivalry to McCain's surprise left-field selection of Palin as VP. I found the matter compelling and even wanted to read whenever possible, if not at work or driving or some other important task. :) The book is divided by campaigns and general election. Democrat first, Republican and then general.

Unfortunately there are some negatives. I suspect I would not have enjoyed it as much if I wasn't as familiar with the players--the authors give a rather cursory overview to the backgrounds of the candidates and their major staff players, assuming the reader knows the characters really well already. I found it confusing though, when the authors would refer to some advisers or major staff players by last names only--I'd have to dig through my memory to think about who such and such was. For the most part though, the staff names do not matter unless the reader has a special interest in him or her.

On occasion the narrative drags a bit and alternates between attention-sucking page turning or slightly awkward and uninteresting storytelling. This applies to both sides of story, Democrat or Republican, which makes me think it's an author issue. I also somewhat wish the authors discussed some of the other players--for instance Bill Richardson is not mentioned very much and John Edwards is dropped in only every once in a while once he leaves the primary battle. I would have thought George W. Bush might have loomed larger on the Republican side as well. There is also the issue of narrating the story specifically from each party's side. The opposing side typically got little mention, which might have helped with context and is little odd to read since they are taking place concurrently.

Overall I really enjoyed it. It makes me wonder how interesting 2012 will be. ( )

Talk about being a fly on the wall.... This book was fascinating. It tells the stories of the three main presidential contenders in 2008: Obama, Hillary Clinton and McCain, with a little bit about Edwards included for good measure. The differences in their styles was profound, from the reasons they each chose to run, to their decision making processes, to the campaign teams they assembled and how those teams worked. The part about how Palin was chosen was scary. I don't know if the author was an Obama partisan, but you certainly come away from this book feeling like we elected the person who was best equipped to lead the country. ( )

I found it very interesting. It's easy to get caught up in the public personas and forget that these folks are just people.

Well done and entertaining as well as informative and interesting. ( )

What a riveting read! I have wanted to read this book since the day it came out - can't believe it took me this long to do so. The access these reporters got to so many of the players involved makes this a can't-put-down book. There is so much to mine here: the field of also-rans, the primaries, the highlights we all saw & remember, the low points we suspected but no one would confirm. To see what went into the most electrifying election in my lifetime was fascinating. Can't wait to get my hands on Double Down :) ( )

Very good. Amazing and surreal at times. Most of the book (over 50%) focuses on the Democratic primary race. Scary stuff about Edwards and Palin. At times was annoyed with the 'big words' used throughout and references to 'world/land' when talking about the candidates camps but did not overshaddow the overall effectiveness of the narrative. Very good and entertaining. Truth is definitely stranger than fiction! ( )

Game Change is gripping in its own, nonfiction, airport-thriller kind of way. Lightly presented and filled with glib generalizations and cheap shots, this is political reporting as melodramatic beach read... But readers wanting to know what really happened in the 2008 election and what it meant for the nation should look elsewhere.

Perhaps a warning label could be conjured for this type of format: "While pleasant and not injurious to your health, it may strain credibility receptors."

Heilemann and Halperin have conducted hundreds of interviews to provide the inside story of the 2008 campaign, longer on vignettes and backstage gossip than on analysis. But if their racy account provides little context for Obama’s rise, it vividly shows how character flaws large and small caused his opponents to self-destruct.

Though this book focuses on personal matters, not policy concerns, and though some of what will be its most talked about passages fall into the realm of gossip and reflect the views of chatty and, in some cases, bitter, regretful or spin-conscious aides, the volume does leave the reader with a vivid, visceral sense of the campaign and a keen understanding of the paradoxes and contingencies of history.
