This short ready-to-read book is about Mrs. Connor's class who takes a field trip to an apple orchard to pick apples. Michael, one of the classmates, refuses to pick apples. The other classmates experiment with different ways to pick apples, like shaking them off the tree and jumping up to grab them. Everyone adds dozens of apples to the pile except Michael. The teacher finds a creative way to get Michael to pick the apples and join the rest of the class.
This is a very short book for beginning readers. It has bright colorful illustrations to keep them engaged. Good story that students could relate to.

Michael refuses to participate in picking apples during a field trip until his teacher starts saying apple names and he discovers that there is an apple named granny smith. It has the same last name as his!

The pictures illustrate this story well, and students can practice their sight words. The names of some of the children are complicated for beginners in my opinion, but overall, it's an average read for students. Would be particulary good as a springboard for a real field trip to the apple orchard! ( )
