This book describes and catalogues all the architectural projects of John Webb, England's first trained, professional architect, and discusses them in the context of contemporary theory and practice. Providing richly illustrated photographs of the surviving buildings, Webb's own drawings, and several newly drawn, annotated plans, this is the first study to assess the full significance of his major architectural contributions. Bold also discusses Webb's involvement in linguistic studies as the first writer in English on the Chinese language, including his attempts to prove that the language of the ancient Chinese was the original language of humankind.… (mere)
