A case of a real-life exorcism (not that I'm making claims here about whether or not she was possessed, or whether or not you CAN be possessed). But someone thought she was, and this is an account of what happened. If you find that kind of thing interesting, you will be extremely interested in this book. ( ) 1685 The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel, by Felicitas D. Goodman (read 5 Jan 1982) Anneliese Michel of Klingenberg, Bavaria, died on July 1, 1976, having been the subject of exorcism for quite a while. The priests involved were convicted of negligent homicide, as were her parents. Obviously the convictions were a miscarriage of justice, as this book shows. I am not too impressed by the book--it is obviously written by one seeking to show the defendants should not have been convicted. The book does not convincingly explain the experience. If I had been in the presence of the subject I surely would have felt it was a genuine case of possession. It is unfortunate a more vigorous defense of the priests was not made, though Father Alt is a little weird, I fear. But Father Renz seems to have been proceeding much as exorcists such as Father Theophilus Reisinger, the exorcist in the case at Earling, Iowa, did. The author of the book says the medicine Anneliese was taking may have been the reason the exorcism did not succeed. A fascinating book. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
In 1976 a young German girl named Anneliese Michel underwent a series of exorcisms. The rites were administered by two priests of the Catholic Church to free Anneliese of the six demons they believed possessed her. Seemingly as a result of the exorcisms the girl died. Worldwide publicity followed when the girl's parents and the two exorcists were brought to trial and convicted of negligent homicide. Here a noted anthropologist offers her own interpretation of the exorcisms of Anneliese Michel. Drawing on interviews with the two exorcists, the girl's parents and friends, transcripts of the trial, and tape recordings made during the exorcisms - as well as studies of religious experience in various cultures - Felicitas Goodman has written a fascinating, compelling book, one that finally tells what happened in this strange case as it delves into the age-old mystery of demonic possession.
