( ) I decided to read this because my friends all watch the anime and I saw an episode and it looked interesting enough but really the manga isn't that interesting. The story's fine, although I suppose that's what intrigued me in the first place. What I didn't like was the characters. They seemed to all be anime cliches, thrown together into a pretty interesting story. I can't even tell Soul Eater and Black Star apart. I suppose the only characters I liked were Maka and Death the kid. I think what really turned me away from this was the "fanservice;" that is, butts. I believe this is the reason I stopped reading manga four years ago; I was sick of this sexual pandering to who I am guessing is an audience of teenage males. So yeah, that took away a lot of depth that the story had the potential to vehicle. I must say I was a tad disappointed but nevertheless I'll try watching some of the television show in case it's any better. I really wanted to like this book. And basically I did like the story line. However this is a graphic novel and the illustrations play a very large part of this story. The amount of gratuitous nudity, and the misogyny was disgusting. I had book 2 but I could not bring myself to read it because I was so disappointed in book 1. Most of the nudity was not needed. The one character grabbing the female characters breasts and complaining that they are not equal size (on two different sisters, not on one body) was horrid and uncalled for. This book was like a teenaged wet dream. This series has twenty-something books, and I hope for readers' sake, the misogyny stopped at book 1. This might be one of those rare cases when the anime does it better than the manga - Soul Eater seems to work better when it has color and voices and can come alive on the screen with its madcap humor and flashy action scenes. Not to say that the manga is bad, it's just makes for a better animation than something laying flat on the page. This might be a series where fans would want to stick to either anime or manga less they risk disappointment. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
