I have read several books, both fiction and NF, about the horrifying Bosnian War 1992-96, and I still feel like I am reading a dystopian novel. A terribly disturbing one. I have also read Sacco’s excellent graphic novel, Safe Area Goražde: The War in Eastern Bosnia, which covers the five months he spent in Bosnia, looking at the awful aftermath. In The Fixer, Sacco returns to Bosnia focusing on various shady characters, who share stories about their experiences during the war. The text is well-written and the illustrations are excellent. Joe Sacco returns to Bosnia, this time at the end of the war. He interviews various people still traumatised by the war, including a burnt out fixer and an artist-soldier. I always found Sacco's depictions of the Bosnian conflict to be much more disturbing than his Israeli-Palestinian coverage. In Palestine, the mutual hatred is at least understandable. This work is neither as chilling nor as focused as Safe Area Gorazde, but still conveys the sense of a society struggling to reform after a dreadful conflict. ( )

Een tijdje terug bestelde ik bij Broese "De fikser". Het boek was niet meer leverbaar, maar een maand later lag het bij de Slegte in de ramsj. Ik heb een stuk of tien exemplaren gekocht en gegeven aan vrienden die van een goed boek houden.
In "The fixer and other stories" staan 3 verhalen: "The fixer" dat ik al in het Nederlands had gelezen, "Soba" en "Christmas with Karadzic". Voor Sacco is dit boek een tussendoortje, maar wel een erg goed tussendoortje. ( )
